Kevin Clogstoun: A Return to St Mary's

In 1991, documentary photographer Kevin Clogstoun spent six months visiting St Mary's House of Welcome, sharing lunches, building relationships and getting to know the people who walked through our doors each day. Rather than simply photographing homelessness, Kevin captured moments of dignity, connection and everyday life, creating an intimate portrait of a community often overlooked.

These photographs were first exhibited in 1992 and, more than three decades later, Kevin felt it was important that they be seen once again. Their return offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the history of St Mary's and the people whose stories continue to shape our community.

Born in Sri Lanka, Kevin migrated to Melbourne in 1969 and discovered photography as a way to tell human stories. Formally trained at Photography Studies College, his work has been driven by a deep commitment to human rights and social justice. Over the past several decades he has documented humanitarian issues across Australia and throughout Asia. His photography has been published internationally.

Creative Wellness Workshops : Art That Tells a Story

Alongside Kevin's photography, the exhibition features twelve original artworks created by participants in St Mary's Creative Wellness Workshop.

The Creative Wellness Workshops provide a safe and welcoming space where people can explore creativity, develop new skills and express themselves through art. Using a variety of mixed media techniques, each artwork reflects the individuality, imagination and lived experiences of its creator.

Together, these pieces celebrate the power of creativity to build confidence, foster connection and create moments of joy, reminding us that every person has a story worth sharing.
